Angie's Elephant Report

The Elephant
Introduction
Elephants are the largest land animal. They are in the proboscidea animal group.

Background
Jamuna was the first elephant at Auckland Zoo.

Characteristics
The male Elephant weighs 1,800 - 6,300 kilograms and the female elephants weigh 2,700- 3,600 kilograms. Asian Elephant tails can grow from 1.2m-1.5 metres.

Diet and habitats
Elephants eat several hundreds of pounds of grass, small plants, bushes, fruit, twigs, tree bark and roots. Elephants spend 80% of their day eating.  The African and Asian elephants are found in savannahs, grasslands, forests, deserts, swampsides and mountains.

Adaptations
Elephant tusks grow up to 11 feet which are used for digging, fighting, marking and feeding.


Jaw dropping facts
Elephants can live for more than 70 years. Female elephants are called cows. The female only gives birth every four years. They can not survive twenty four hours without water. Elephants purr like cats.

Impact of cross breeding or extinction info
The extinct elephant members are the Deinotheres, Gomphothers, mammoths and mastodons.
Conclusion
There aren’t many elephants left on earth. Only the Asian and the African elephants are still alive. I hope there are always elephant in our world.
